Human Anatomy - Respiratory System
The respiratory system allows us to breathe. It is made up of several key areas including the nose, mouth, trachea, and lungs. The respiratory system works very closely with the circulatory system. The purpose of breathing is for the body to obtain oxygen, and release carbon dioxide, which is waste. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried by the blood. Normal adults breathe about 12-16 times in one minute. When exercising, they may breathe up to 45 times in a minute.
