Elko, Nevada's history begins with its first residents, the Shoshone Indians about 12,000 years ago. Some fur trappers and explorers began passing through in the 1820's and in the 1840's covered wagons carrying families travelled along the Humboldt River on the California Trail right through Elko! But Elko was officially established on December 29, 1868 as Central Pacific Railroad workers built eastward to join with the Union Pacific in Utah to complete the transcontinental railroad! The rest is history! Join us on a short tour of our historic downtown and the transformation of our little railroad town to the Gold-mining city it is today!
