In 1763 two surveyors, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon were hired by the Penn and Calvert Families to survey a border between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Starting in Deleware, they were able to survey most of the border until they were forced to stop by local Native Americans in Core, West Virginia.
