Djenné : mud, magic, faith and learning
This is the story of a mudbrick city that has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a journey through Djenné - its glorious past, fragile present, and precarious future. The city stands on a remote island in the Niger Inland Delta at the southern border of the Sahara in Mali, West Africa. A thousand years ago caravans linked West Africa with the rich civilizations of the Middle East, bringing Islam and wealth to Djenné, as well as law, saints and magic.
